Hound & Stag: More than just a beer and a hotdog

A new brewery has opened on the northern end of the Gold Coast and is already making its mark serving up craft beers, cocktails, a mouth-watering menu, along with an impressive line-up of live entertainment and events.

Hound & Stag opened their massive doors earlier this year and the success of this venue in Arundel is already exceeding expectations, or rather the wildest dreams of five mates who have literally built the brewery through passion and perseverance.

The moment one walks in the doors there is a vibe that is welcoming and atmospheric, with an arty industrial feel, huge brewing tanks, beanbags for the kids, a range of seating options and an open, airy walk through space.

There are two different beer gardens in addition to two private spaces: The Barn and the Stag Room, that offer enticing packages for private functions. It is an accessible, family friendly venue – canine friendly too.

The owners worked seven days a week and have created it 100% themselves, with attention to detail and an emphasis on recycling – even the bricks have been hand painted! Head Chef, Jay, had an immediate connection with the staff and venue and came back to them with a very unique menu. No hotdogs or food vans at Hound & Stag.

Popular items on the menu include the Peanut and Jelly Sandwich with 12 hour braised rib fillet and the Fried Chicken Burger with Korean style chicken marinated in buttermilk. But the piece de resistance would have to be the 750gm Tomahawk Steak that serves 2-4, accompanied by a Stag Paddle of your choice.

Now, down to the beers! Hound and Stag have an Artisan Licence, so all alcohol is locally produced and include Capricorn Distilling and Wildflower Gin. Ben, Head Brewer, began creating in his garage and has embraced the next level by producing a wide range of beers with a focus on quality and flavour, and old traditional recipes.

Featuring almost 30 taps, the brews include pale ales, session lager, lager, and are already winning major prizes. They took out gold at the Royal Qld Beer Awards after only being open for 10 weeks, and five out of five beers were placed. One of the owners, David Cook, said one of the hardest jobs was agreeing on the names of the beers. They range from Zee Beer to Hoptimist to Bermuda Palms! Hound & Stag is a must-visit for anyone looking for an exceptional beer (and much, much more) in a fun and lively atmosphere.
