Queensland singer/songwriter, recording artist and multi-instrumentalist, Mitch King, has dropped his his brand-new independent single, ‘Big Bright Moon’, as he hits the road for a stack of shows across Queensland and New South Wales.
‘Big Bright Moon’ was produced with Blake Malone, who captured the essence of the one-man band that is Mitch King, and how the song is played live with the clarity of the studio and his producer’s icing.
The new single is the first offering of many soon-to-be recorded songs to come out of the comfort of King’s home studio.
Highly regarded for his evocative, raw and dynamic live performances, Mitch King combines electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica, kick and snare drums plus tambourine.
His distinctive Southern blues and Australian roots and folk music is a sweet mixture of inventive, electrified and acoustic music. On the road right now in support of the release, Mitch answered a few questions for us.
Long time no speak! What have the last couple of years been like for you?
I've been keeping busy. Last couple of years have been good for me. A little bit of down time of course, however I've been spending much of my time sharpening my music tools by learning more music theory and vocal practice. I think the great artists are those who can keep learning new music skills and fine tuning their art. So, this is what I've been focusing on and it's opened more ideas for my songwriting.
Tell us about ‘Big Bright Moon’. Does it represent any kind of musical evolution for you, and if so, how?
It was a really fun song to write and record and it's quite different to anything I've written before. I based the song around the Eqyptian/Middle Eastern scale with an uncommon time signature and this made the songwriting process challenging and exciting. I reckon people will be able to hear musical evolution in the song, however, I'll let the people be the judge.
What does the rest of 2023 look like for you?
I'm touring from late July to October. Starting off at Rockhampton River Festival and as far north Qld as Black Mountain Unplugged Festival then to the South of Sydney at Kiama promoting my new single. Other than that, I'm currently writing and recording for a new album...so you can expect to hear more music and shows later in the year.
Listen to ‘Big Bright Moon’ on all the usual platforms, and catch Mitch live on 1 October at Sounds of Life on the Gold Coast, and 6 October at Howl & Moan Records in Byron. Tickets via mitchking.com.
