Early in August, a young Gold Coast artist found himself amongst five national finalists from 1400 entries in this year’s Triple J Unearthed High prize. 17-year-old Jacob Biermann, already fielding praise for his new single ‘Red’ from trusted commentators like Richard Kingsmill and Tommy Faith, notes some of his influences as G-Flip, Ruel and The Chainsmokers.

Formerly from Reedy Creek’s Kings College and now at JMC Academy, Biermann commented on the Unearthed High experience.

“Being part of the competition has been amazing; getting to know the other artists was super fun and hearing my song on the radio was a massive highlight.”

'Red' mixes up a heartfelt but catchy pop tune with Biermann’s impressive vocal range, and wrestles with the emotions of someone desperately seeking help but struggling with how to communicate it.

“I see red when people don’t understand me,” notes Biermann, “but I know art is 100% subjective and can mean anything to anyone, which is one thing I love about it”.

While NSW beating out Queensland isn’t ever really on our radars (#sorrynotsorry), Barrenjoey High in Avalon bred the ultimate Unearthed High 2021 victors, The Rions. Nevertheless, Jacob Biermann’s talent is being recognised nationally and he’ll have an EP out in the not-too-distant future.

In the meantime, ‘Red’ is a must-download offering for indie-pop loving locals from this emerging Gold Coast artist.
