Tourist in my Town: Q1, Australia’s tallest residential tower

Gold Coast's iconic Q1 is well worth a picturesque staycay, foodie fix or skyline viewing at.

When it was built in 2005, the Gold Coast’s Q1 was the tallest residential building in the world. Maintaining that title for seven years until it was overtaken by the Princess Tower in Dubai. It still remains the tallest residential building in Australia, and the view does not disappoint.

Even people who don’t know much about the Gold Coast will recognise the Q1’s profile, which was inspired by the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch and the sails of the Sydney Opera House. On a clear day, you can see the spire all the way from Snapper Rocks.

The resort itself offers not only a range of apartments to suit all travellers, but a great location and facilities. The indoor and outdoor pool areas are set across different levels, which makes it feel very spacious. And the Longboards pool bar has a great view across the resort, making it easy to slip between relaxing by the pool and enjoying a few cocktails in the afternoon. Also in the pool area is Stephanie’s Spa, where you can book a range of relaxing treatments.

Q1 is just a few minutes walk from the beach and to Cavill Ave in the heart of Surfers Paradise. But with the range of restaurants available, you don’t have to venture that far. Asami Tenpenyaki is just outside the entrance and provides not only excellent food but entertainment as well. What kind of Gold Coast staycation would it be if you weren’t trying to catch a fried egg in your mouth from across the table? Teppanyaki is also great if you have kids because the chefs make far more mess than your little ones could manage so you don't have to feel bad about the trail of food under the table.

The apartments themselves are well appointed and very spacious with everything you need, not to mention the amazing views. It is one thing to wake up next to the beach, but entirely something else to wake up looking out over the beach, the Pacific Ocean and the entire city of Gold Coast.

The top of the building is dedicated to the Skypoint Observation Deck which has fascinating information about the history of the Gold Coast and surrounding areas as well as a big display from the Surf Life Savers about ocean safety. It is easy to spend hours up there watching the landscape change as the sun moves over the coast. The Skypoint Bistro + Bar offers various deals for food combined with your ticket. From the breakfast buffet to their SkyTea or their lunch and dinner menus. Service is quick and easy, and you can order straight from your table using a QR code. If you are feeling adventurous, they also offer the Skypoint Climb with both day and night options. It is an experience which allows you to scale the outside of Australia’s tallest residential tower—270 metres above sea level— while the guide points out some local landmarks.
