Currumbin home to transform into a dazzling circus

A House, A Home, is set to swing open the door to a residential Currumbin home for an incredible circus performance on 9 and 10 September.

Presented by Glitter Martini, Generate GC and Gold Coast Open House festival, A House, A Home is a semi-immersive, modern circus show taking place inside a residential home.

This theatrical open house invites audiences into the home of highly skilled local Gold Coast circus artists, who live at the residence. See old spaces anew as acrobatics, contortion, dance and juggling fill familiar rooms as performers interact with ordinary spaces in extraordinary ways.

Situated in the Currumbin hinterland, Kingfisher House, is a one-of-kind home built with sustainability front of mind.

These intimate shows allow ticket holders to get right up close to the performers, with many opportunities to interact with the work. Walk from room to room, to play scrabble with a contortionist, or help an acrobat build the world’s most structurally unsound piece of Ikea furniture. This show explores the idea of the house as a commodity, versus the home as a place made by the people who live within it.

A House, A Home is a timely work, touching on the housing stress faced by many Australians today.

“What audiences are seeing when they attend this show, is the mission of a real estate agent to sell this house as a shiny object, in juxtaposition to the real, joyful, and imperfect lives being lived inside the house by the tenants, whose future is uncertain while the home may be sold”

Director Darcie Rae says of the work, “I wanted to create a circus work that humanises the people doing these amazing things. I took elements of immersive theatre and combined it with the incredible skills of circus artists in the familiar world of the home, creating something where audiences feel connected to the performers and the scenes while still being amazed by the things the performers can do. I loved creating the opportunity for audience members to interact with the work, and experience the show rather than passively watch it.”

While touching on deeper issues, A House, A Home is a fun, quirky, and engaging contemporary circus show that will delight, surprise, and leave you thinking about what home means to you.
