Welcome to your June / July print edition, and isn’t there a lot to talk about!
Organisers all over the city have been keeping themselves busy prepping for a slew of awesome events as part of our cultural calendar’s busiest time of year. We’ve got Surface Festival hitting Miami, Bleach* just around the corner in August, SWELL in September. Botanical Bazaar is making a welcome return after a Covid-induced hiatus, and over the border, Byron Writers Festival is shaping up to be amazing, come August.
Gold Coast Music Awards and SPRINGTIME are starting to drop some juicy details, and Splendour is looking as exciting as ever. Our awesome contemporary dance collective The Farm just made their QPAC debut with Glass Child – we’re so proud – so be sure to check out our website for our interview with those talented creatives.
HOTA has heaps of cool stuff coming up, among which is the Tony award-winning musical ONCE doing an exclusive Queensland run, and the unmissable Deadly Hearts coming in July, featuring our own Budjerah. Speaking of HOTA, the recent news that HOTA Gallery Director Tracey Cooper-Lavery is moving on after seven amazing years in the role has hit us all in the feels here at Blank HQ. Congrats on your new Canberran opportunity Tracy, but you’ll be missed! What a fabulous job you’ve done.
Tonnes of new music has been crossing our desks lately. Be sure to read the new music section and check it out online to listen to some of the tunes. Our perennial fave Saint Lane has just dropped another epic album, and Busby Marou are off on a national tour! Also, if you’ve never heard of the Sounds of Life initiative, check out our piece on this wicked live music experience. You won’t regret it.
