Album review: Atticus Chimp | Space Exploitation

Tamborine locals Sam Bray and Daniel Briffa have taken the past and blown it all away with their new EP, ‘Space Exploitation’.

Last year’s hit ‘Liquid Percussion’ was accompanied by a heart-thumping video, filmed in a dark car going nowhere fast and back again, in the GC hinterland. No surprise that the clip won a Gold Award at the Australian Cinematography Society Awards for Leroy Button.

This year, their fourth release may well be a prequel to that unhappy tale, with an EP of grungy and meaningful new songs that are brash, unconventional, and refreshingly hardcore. Recorded at Blind Boy Studios, it’s a bit like Grinspoon and Powderfinger had a baby rockstar; all thunderous riffs, raspy vocals, and upbeat energy.

Even with this old school/new school sound, they stand out among their peers, and checking out their back catalogue makes me want to see where this juggernaut is going next.

‘Propane’ hits you hard with catchy morbid references to all the wrong ways we get through hard times. It comes with a pretty cool old fashioned rock’n’roll video.

‘Not Compatible’ carries you back into those bad relationships where infatuation turns to clashes, and trust to trauma. Life gets a bit out of control. Memorable lyrics, ‘I swear this sensationalist trope is a result of my haphazard brain’, references feelings we can all relate to, in a pop punk future classic.

Atticus Chimps’ ethereal space rock speaks to our alienation, in a world where modern life conflicts so openly and harshly with our monkey selves.
