We Are Burleigh events raise funds to oppose old arcade development

Action group Revive Burleigh DeLuxe Theatre is inviting locals to get together and celebrate the people, places and history of Burleigh, while raising funds to oppose the development of the old Burleigh Theatre arcade.

We Are Burleigh is a series of events planned over the coming months that will promote local identity and character while raising important funds for the appeal against the development on the site of the iconic Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade.

Mo’s Desert Clubhouse is hosting the inaugural event on 23 March. From 4pm, a family-friendly afternoon being run by Hand Bent Banana will offer plenty of fun for all.

Members of the public can create their own portrait for the Burleigh Views Tiny Art Gallery or leave their mark on a surfboard (entry by donation).

The Art Exchange will also be there helping people create their own masterpiece of Burleigh to take home at one of their renowned Sip and Paint sessions (bookings essential).

For those less-inclined to dip their brush, they’re more than welcome to watch others, including a small group of esteemed local emerging and professional artists who’ll be collaborating on a Burleigh-themed artwork. This piece is destined to be a major drawcard of One Arts Gold Coast’s auction planned for later in the year.

Music will kick-off from 6pm headlined by Gold Coast favourites Lotus Ship + Is Mankind + Funny Goats + Tesh Batkins round out the all local affair. With a backdrop of projected historical photos taking you through the history of Burleigh, it promises to be a great night of visual, sound and hands-on entertainment.

The group, Revive Burleigh De Luxe Theatre Arcade, formed as a response to the widespread shock to the development proposal for the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade (formerly De Luxe Theatre).

They believe the heritage-listed building deserves more than becoming just another high-rise, and that its significance deserves more than just keeping its facade. As a community focal point and gathering place for more than 80 years, the group believes the building should continue to be so into the future.
