How you can help those affected by the floods

If you have been lucky enough to remain unaffected by the most recent natural disaster to hit our corner of Australia, then it's a good time to roll up the sleeves and get helping.

Off the back of the largest downpour on record, thousands of residents in South East Queensland and Northern NSW are dealing with extensive damage, injury, loss of property, power and homes.

We've collated a list of options for you to help in a variety of ways, whether it's offering financial aid, or donating time and goods.

Participate in the Mud Army V2

Remember the huge outpouring of help from local citizens that happened after the 2011 floods? Well, if you sign up to Volunteering Queensland you can be a part of Round 2 of the clean up efforts across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and Gold Coast.

Attend a relief fundraiser

Spend a great night out with friends and help support flood victims through your ticket purchase. Upcoming events: Floodraiser at Miami Marketta, Chutney at Iku Yakitori, Club Soda + supports at elsewhere, Late Nights - Weezer at Vinnie's Dive will all be shooting money towards flood relief.

Help the SES

The SES is stretched to its limits dealing with the aftermath of the flooding. You can donate to the Queensland SES here, and the New South Wales SES here.

Foster an animal

It's not just people who have been affected by this crisis. There are lots of animals in need of immediate care, and with some shelters full to overflowing, and some underwater, temporary fooster carers are in dire need. If you can take an animal into your home for a while, it'd be worth contacting your local shelter.

Use Givit

Givit is the best online platform to use for donations, as it fills real, and often urgent, requirements in their communities on a needs basis, meaning that communities won't be overwhelmed dealing with a whole bunch of stuff they don't need. All financial donations passed through Givit will be distributed to impacted areas in partnership with Queensland and New South Wales governments.

Lend an ear

Anyone who has been severely affected by the floods is likely to be experiencing trauma, and it can look ugly. Be patient, kind and understanding with everyone you know who has been through the experience. Don't jump straight into "fix" mode as it can be overwhelming. Just letting people talk can sometimes be one of the most healing things you can do.

Support Foodbank

Foodbank Australia is the only Australian organisation that provides direct food relief in the wake of natural disasters. Donations to Foodbank will cover food, freight and resources to deliver food to the hardest-hit areas around Queensland in the coming weeks.

Be mindful

It's important to remember in times of crisis that it's better to direct your efforts in as specific a way as possible. Dumping a whole bunch of clothes or household goods at local charities is likely to overwhelm their already-stressed volunteers. The options above are all the safest way to go, and obviously if you encounter any GoFundMes or other personal requests that seem legit, that's another way to help someone in a really direct way.

A statewide support hotline has been established for those seeking support – 1800 173 349.
